The European Mathematics Society Prizes are awarded every four years during the European Congress of Mathematics. These prestigious prizes are awarded “to young researchers not older than 35 years, of European nationality or working in Europe, in recognition of excellent contributions in  mathematics.”

Kaisa Matomäki is currently an Academy Research Fellow at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Turku. Matomäki is a number theorist specialising in the distribution of multiplicative functions over short intervals of numbers. With her long term collaborator, Maksym Radziwiłł of Caltech University, she proved, among other results, that the values of the Möbius function are evenly divided between +1 and −1 over almost all short intervals.

They were awarded the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2016 and the 2019 New Horizons Prize for Early-Career Achievement in Mathematics.

Matomäki completed her PhD at Royal Holloway College of the University of London in 2009 under the direction of Professor Glyn Harman.
