On 4 March 2019, all School of Law students and staff are invited to a guest lecture on prisons by Professor Nick Hardwick and Phil Wheatley CB, former Director-General of HMPS and NOMS, and prison governor.
On Monday 4th March, we are opening up a third-year lecture on our Prisons optipnal course (CR3023) to the entire student and staff body of the School of Law (on a FCFS basis), as this is an exciting opportunity to hear two influential individuals speak on the matter of prison governance, how prisons are managed at an individual and national level, how and to whom they are accountable (or not), and how this differs between the private and public sectors.
The lecture will be given jointly by Professor Nick Hardwick (School of Law RHUL, former HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, and former Chair of the Parole Board) and guest lecturer, Phil Wheatley CB, who had many years’ experience as a prison governor and Director-General of HM Prison Service and the National Offender Management Service, before retiring in 2010. The session will conclude with a discussion, to which you are encouraged to contribute.
There are 65 spaces being opened up to students across all programmes and at all levels (UG, PGT and PGR) within the School of Law, as well as staff members.

Prisons is a 15-credit course which can be taken in the final year by BSc Criminology & Sociology, BSc Criminology & Psychology, and all LLB Law students.
